Cocktails & Business…WOW!!!

August 20th, 2010

Last night we met with a client that has designed and created her own type of alcoholic beverage.  It is an amazingly smooth drink that makes you want to throw a party!  We are helping her grow and market the business.  We have partnered with an attorney to create the business entity, obtain the proper licensing and ensure we are following the many laws of the adult beverage industry.

We are really pleased to be working with this client because the project is very different from what we usually do.  It offers the chance to help an impressive women launch a new company and product from the ground up…something we have a significant amount of experience in doing.  We can not disclose much at this point, but we want to keep all of our readers up to date on this, so that when the product goes to market or is available for sample you get the inside scoop!

In a few weeks we will be updating you on this project given day one is today!  Stay Tuned….

Can You Break the Water Balloon?

July 20th, 2010

Think of your business as a water balloon and your customers/members are the water you are filling it with.  If before you start filling the balloon I spoke a series of holes in it, what happens when you try to fill it?  You start pouring water into the balloon and it never fills up, but you keep trying, but just end up wasting money on water.

Sadly this is how many businesses are structured.  Marketers and business leaders bring customers into a business system that has back doors open and is leaking people.  They think it is a marketing problem…”we are not getting enough customers and do not seem to be growing”.  Well what happens when you try to fill a balloon with leaks?  Water leaks out!

If companies put more resources and effort to discovering and patching the leaks they currently have and putting systems in place to watch for others; what happens?  The balloon starts to fill with water, does not leak, and eventually reaches maximum capacity and a second balloon is needed to hold more water.

Do you see how important member/customer retention is?  And how important customer loyalty can be?  When you truly focus on taking care of your customers and keeping them well informed; they will continue to provide you with the gift of their patronage and a full balloon.

The #1 Problem is Poor Communication

May 20th, 2010

com·mu·ni·ca·tion

com·mu·ni·ca·tion –noun

1. the act or process of communicating; fact of being communicated.

2. the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs.

3. something imparted, interchanged, or transmitted.

4. a document or message imparting news, views, information, etc.

5. passage, or an opportunity or means of passage, between places.

6. communications,

a. means of sending messages, orders, etc., including telephone, telegraph, radio, and television.

Bill Gates wrote a book in 1999 called Business at the Speed of Thought.  This book is about living in an “On-Demand” world where everything and anything we want moves closer to happening instantly.  All of this can happen through technology.  But how are we as people looking at and improving how we communicate to keep up with the technology?
The #1 problem we see with business is the lack of communication.  A company with 200 employees has a serious amount of talent and knowledge to achieve great things. But how do you take companies that are 100 or 10,000 employee’s and get them to operate as a team and have the information they need to execute at optimal levels?
First the company needs to look at how information flows up, down and across the chain of command.  Too many times the issue with communication is that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to move information from department 1 to department 2.  It takes time to figure out what and how to communicate so that others in the organization know what is going on.  The more knowledge can be spread around the business the more new ideas will be generated.
Second, there needs to be a sole point of communication.  It is already a challenge having access to too much information; why have multiple forms, channels, platforms, etc?  Have one means of communicating.  We use BasecampHQ as our system of communication either with our clients or internally.  It is not an ideal platform for a large company, but can be very effective for small to medium size businesses.  It become a virtual repository for all messages, files, chatrooms, projects, milestones, to-do’s, etc.  The organization or client relationship becomes transparent.
Third, if people in the organization do not know what employees have what responsibilities then how do they know who to drive certain pieces of communication to?  For example:  Someone in operations needs to hold an event for customers and wants to make it large scale.  They take on the role of getting the event ready and working to promote it, meanwhile the marketing director knows nothing about it and could have saved the operations director 6 hours with resources or event marketing processes that were already in place.  If you are going to work for a business that has hundreds of employee’s, then find out who is available to help, support or delegate to.
If you hold communications internally and externally to be equally as important as having a bookkeeper or CFO then you will find that business becomes easier and the employee’s and customer’s happiness goes way up.  A well informed person is a happy one.

The Secret of Running a Productive Business

April 20th, 2010

“The one quality which sets one man apart from another – the key which lifts one to every aspiration while others are caught up in the mire of mediocrity – is not talent, formal education, nor intellectual Brightness – it is Self-Discipline.

With Self-Discipline, all things are possible.  Without it even the simplest goal can seem like the impossible dream.” -Theodore Roosevelt

self-dis·ci·pline

–noun

Discipline and training of oneself, usually for improvement: Acquiring the habit of promptness requires self-discipline.

Self Discipline is a method for effecting change in oneself which leads to change within an organization.  If you can not lead a disciplined life, you will not have a disciplined business.  It starts with the leader.  Here is how you do it:

Take on one discipline on at a time.  It takes roughly 60-90 days doing a task daily before it becomes habit and part of your behavior.  Only undertake one at a time.  Now think about how you implement change with your company and start new projects?  If you try to change too much the employee’s will not be able to maintain the disciplines to complete them.

Remember……..“Talent without discipline is like an Octopus on roller skates.  There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be forward, backwards, or sideways.”

Weekend Morning Coffee Chat

March 20th, 2010

Welcome to the relaxing Weekend Morning Coffee Chat (sponsored by Caffeine).  I get up late on the weekends to pour a cup of coffee and think about what the best subject to chat about could be.  Today I want to talk about Family.

We work with many business owners daily and understand their committment to their businesses and what is required to succeed.  However, you may be a good owner, have good work ethic, and good skills to succeed, but if you are not striving for excellence at home with your family then you will just be good at work, not excellent!

Let’s face it, when we are on our A Game at home we get our spouse’s A Game and the energy of the home is elevated which then creates a boost in energy going to work.  Why go home to fight a battle when you have been fighting battles all day at the office to succeed?

Owning a business can pull you away from giving your family the caring and attention they need. You do not have to be with them every second of the day, but you do need to plan time to show them how important they are.  It is not about the quantity of time you spend with your family!  It is about the QUALITY of time you spend with them! Find a time to balance family and business and give them your absolute best when you are with them.  That means…lose the blackberry, close the laptop, have an activity to do, pay attention to all conversation and LISTEN, and enjoy each other like you did when you first started dating.

Your attitude towards your family will manifest the outcomes.  If you are negative and don’t spend the quality time then you will get a family that is negative to you and does not have time for you!  If you bring a positive attitude and high level of energy to your family you will get back everything you put out.  You are in control of your attitude.  Make a great family life happen and you will see dramatic results in your work performance and clarity!
